Instructor DVD

The DVD provides assistance for parents/instructors to visually see strategies for implementing the bSAFE bFIT! Program for Kids. The creator and a classroom teacher will show instructors firsthand how they utilize the lesson plans.

Along with implementation ideas, visual demonstrations of exercise routines from “Move n’ with Fitness Pals” CD will be shown and each Fitness Pal will be demonstrated.

GENERAL WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

    The ½ day workshop introduces the newest educational fitness program for kids that addresses childhood obesity, entititled the bSAFE bFIT! Program for kids.  Innovative and turn-key learning strategies are presented that focus on physical activity and nutrition education within the same curriculum.  

    The workshop participants will discuss the emotional and physical ramifications of childhood obesity, stressing the importance of an effective action plan.  Participants will make connections on how the bSAFE bFIT!  Program can meet their educational needs and action plan.  Details will also be given on the educational tools and learning strategies provided by the bSAFE  bFTI! Program, including:

    1.      bSAFE bFIT! Manual with lesson plans

    2.      Fitness Pal Posters

    3.      Fitness Pal Activity Cards

    4.      “Move n’ with Fitness Pals” CD

    5.      Instructor DVD

    Fun visual food characters will be highlighted throughout the workshop—foods illustrating physical activity (addressing two concepts with one character).  For example, the Watermelon Jack (known as the jumping jack) represents the Fruit Group and the Aerobic component of health-related physical fitness. 

    bSAFE bFIT!  targets children ages 2 through 12 with research-based information.

    An overview of the National Standards for Physical Education, the National Health Education Standards,  USDA MyPyramid for kids, brain/mind learning principles, family and community involvement, curriculum infusion, multicultural infusion, inclusion, and assessments are among the many educational trends presented.

    Resources for the workshop include the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

    It is an ideal session for:

    • Teachers/Instructors (elementary classroom, physical education, science, and health; preschool, daycare) searching for learning strategies that teach both physical activity and nutrition education.
    • Local Wellness coordinators and panel members searching for programs to meet their Local Wellness Policy goals
    • Parents searching for fun and exciting strategies they can use right at home that get their children up and moving while learning

    At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will:

    1. Base their instruction on the National Standards for Physical Education and the National Health Education Standards.
    2. Become a leader in efforts to improve children’s wellness.
    3. Be prepared to easily implement physical activity and nutrition education within the same curriculum.
    4. Better understand the five components of health-related physical fitness.
    5. Better understand the relationship between childhood obesity and academic performance.
    6. Be prepared to meet specific wellness goals required for the Local Wellness Policy.
    7. Walk away with instructor and kid-friendly learning strategies that can be implemented the next day.

    Mission Statement

    The workshop introduces a new and innovative educational fitness program for kids that addresses childhood obesity and utilizes turn-key learning strategies that stress the importance of teaching both physical activity and nutrition education within the same curriculum.

    Goals

    The content of the workshop is designed to develop a well-prepared instructor/parent capable of enhancing children’s health-related physical fitness knowledge, fitness level, attitudes, and habits so they can adopt a lifestyle that reflects lifetime wellness; thus, decreasing childhood obesity and increasing academic performance. 

    Purpose

    The workshop is a “hands on” session that provides innovative learning strategies that teach both physical activity and nutrition education. 

    Target Audience

    The target audience includes those most likely to impact children’s wellness for a lifetime:

    • Teachers (classroom, physical education, science, and health; preschool)
    • Administrators
    • Local Wellness coordinators and panel members searching for programs to meet their Local Wellness Policy goals
    • Parents
    • School nurses
    • Cafeteria Staff
    • Instructors (daycares, wellness centers, health clubs, etc.)
    • Program Directors (Extension agencies, YMCA’s, YWCA’s, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.)

    Program Objectives

    At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have acquired the skills needed to enhance children’s health-related fitness knowledge, fitness levels, attitudes and habits concerning wellness by:

    • Leading fun and exciting activities to keep kids moving while learning!
    • Promoting the benefits of physical activity using the five components of health-related physical fitness outlined by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
    • Promoting the benefits of eating healthy foods using the USDA MyPyramid for kids food plan.
    • Providing a range of options for physical activities.
    • Introducing “instructor and kid friendly” educational tools that are “turn key”.
    • Teaching easy five- to ten-minute lesson plans that meet the challenge of limited time.
    • Citing performance outcomes that are based on the National Standards for Physical Education, the National Health Education Standards, and twelve Brain/Mind Learning Principles.
    • Providing age appropriate grouping.
    • Providing ideas for both formal and informal assessment.
    • Providing ideas for curriculum infusion, multicultural infusion, inclusion, and family and community involvement
